How a XRP Ledger address is built
An XRP Ledger classic address is a base58check encoding of a hash of the account’s public key, using the ledger’s own base58 alphabet, which is why every address starts with “r” and runs between twenty-five and thirty-five characters. The four-byte checksum inside it catches a mistyped character.
Many exchanges and services receive on one shared address and tell payers apart with a destination tag, a number sent alongside the payment. An Unheld invoice gives each payment its own address instead, so no tag is needed; a payment to an address that does require a tag, sent without one, may not be credited by that service.
Using it on XRP Ledger
On XRP Ledger this address receives XRP. An Unheld invoice shows the exact address to pay and names the network; nothing else needs to be typed.
Check an address
Paste an address into the checker to see which family and format it is and whether its checksum holds. It reads the format only; nothing is looked up and nothing is stored.
Questions about XRP Ledger addresses
What does an XRP Ledger address look like?
A base58 string starting with “r”, twenty-five to thirty-five characters long, with a checksum inside it. That is the classic address every XRP Ledger account has.
Do I need a destination tag to pay an Unheld invoice in XRP?
No. Each Unheld invoice has its own address, so the payment is identified by the address alone. Tags are how a shared address tells payers apart; the invoice shows exactly what to send.
What is an X-address?
A newer format that packs a classic address and a destination tag into one string starting with “X”. Unheld invoices show the classic address; a wallet that only takes X-addresses can convert between the two.
